In today’s post, we will discuss and understand the Advantages and Disadvantages of Thermal Power plants | Benefits and Drawbacks of Thermal Power Plants with meaning, definition, and description with diagrams and images.
The thermal power plants are also called “Combustion Power Plant”.
The thermal power plant generates electricity from the energy produced by steam by burning coal, natural gas, and biogas.
What is Thermal Power Plant Explanation
In a thermal power plant or power station, the heat energy is converted into electricity.
The water is boiled with high pressure to generate high-pressure steam later, and this pressure is forwarded to the steam turbine connected to the electrical generator.
Rankine Cycle is a process where low-pressure steam from the turbine goes through the steam condenser.
The water is converted to steam with the use of a boiler. When steam pressure in the boiler increases, it touches the turbine connected to the alternator.
Later this alternator produces electricity according to the process done.
Thermal power is categorized into three different types.
- BoilerTurbine
- Alternator

Benefits and Advantages of Thermal Power Plant in points
- The start-up or initial investment of the thermal power plant is huge compared to other plants.
- The thermal power plant does not need a large space for installation compared to a hydrothermal plant.
- The cost of the electricity produced by this power plant is low as it uses coal which is cheaper than other forms of fuels.
- They are easy to maintain and simple to use.
- The thermal power plant can be installed.
- The design and construction period of the thermal power plant is less compared to others.
- Manpower requirement is less.
- Can easily change load without any difficulty.
- They are installed according to their needs, therefore, the transportation cost is reduced incredibly.
Drawbacks and Disadvantages of Thermal Power Plants in Points With Examples
- Fuel is a non-renewable source of energy.
- They are not that efficient.
- They consume a lot of power to generate electricity.
- Turbine speed is approx. 3000 to 4000 pm.
- The life cycle of the thermal power plant is 30 years.
- Immense air pollution is occurred due to the smoke generated by this thermal plant.
- The running cost of the thermal power plant is huge.
- The polluted water from this power plant pollutes rivers and lakes nearby.
- Cooling of water is needed more.
- Waste products are a huge problem.
- Always installed in remote areas.
